This is a true story that has to be told. One of those ones we will pass down for generations. You may think to yourself after reading it, how could you possibly be so ignorant. Yet the glory all goes to God, as you will see.
At three a.m. I woke up and said to my husband, “I smell gas.” Consequently of course, he was sound asleep.
Yet he heard me and responded, “you do?”
Now I have to give you a little more detail here. We live in a large two story house, and our furnace is in the basement. Therefore if I am truly smelling gas, it has traveled out of the basement, thru the first floor and now up to the second to our bedroom.
Needless to say his feet hit the floor and we were both up. I ask you to remember here that just seconds before this, we were both sound asleep.
First of all we ran down the stairs, he grabbed a flash light, and continued on to the basement. For those of you, like me that need to know all the details, we are the only ones in the house. Of course we flipped on lights it was dark, and we were half asleep. I even had the brilliant idea to turn on some ceiling fans.
Now you also need to know here, that this is a very old boiler furnace. Not like the newer ones of today with all the bells and whistles. Besides we were half asleep,Lol. Now keep that in mind as you read on.
At this point I began to question myself maybe this was just me thinking I smelled something and I really didn’t. Yet my husband had said he smelled it also, but did I just convince him of that? It did still smell very strong in our main floor. Therefore I decided to step outside and take some deep breaths to completely clear my sinuses. When I came back in WOW it hit me big time. No doubt about it, it was there.
Just at that time my husband came out of the basement reporting sure enough the pilot light had gone out and the furnace was spewing gas. He had tried to relight it with a match but it wasn’t long enough to reach so he needed the long candle lighter thingy. So as he proceeded to get that I opened windows. I did say to him, “do you think that is a great idea?”
He responded with “I have to get it relit somehow.
That sounded reasonable. LOL!!
Finally a short time later he announced he got it relit and all was well. So with some windows open, ceiling fans on high, and crisis adverted we sat down. Consequently it hit us, or you could say we woke up, right about the same time. WHAT WERE WE THINKING!!! Obviously we weren’t thinking. Only by the grace of God are we still here to tell that story. We should have blown up many times.
Frequently I have heard just get out and don’t turn anything on. Even a little spark can blow you up. Tears rolled down my face when I realized how my innocent neighbors could have lost their homes and maybe their lives. Our house is 2400 square feet plus a full basement and was full of gas. Can you imagine the explosion that would have caused. Don’t tell me there is no God! I’m here to tell you, He watches over His people.
As much as you may see us as idiots, I pray you see God’s love, grace, and protection of our lives and our neighbors.
Needless to say, we got a new furnace.
SO BLESSED!!

I am so glad you are ok!!!! Thankful for God’s hand of protection!
Thank you Terri, this has been a couple years ago. Just feel the need to share the story of God’s protection. It still marvels me to this day.
